WWE: John Cena Can Finally Rest, The Main Roster Has Stepped Up

John Cena called out Roman Reigns for “not doing his job” by keeping Cena out of the WWE spotlight.  The entire WWE roster has since responded in unison, giving Cena exactly what he was asking for.  WrestleMania no longer needs John Cena. 

WrestleMania is officially looming and conspicuous by his absence is John Cena.  He has been completely absent from WWE programming with the exception of a brief two-week run on Raw and SmackDown a couple of months ago.  With the biggest show of the year just around the corner, there does not appear to be an inch of space remaining that would allow Cena to slide into what once was his rightful spot at WrestleMania.

Once again, and possibly for the last time, John Cena is getting exactly what he wants.

In August 2017, Cena had a war of words with Roman Reigns (it was actually a bit one-sided, as Reigns brought a knife to a gunfight that night) that consisted of what has to be considered a bit of truth.  After Roman attempted to go the route of claiming Cena is only still around to hold down younger talent, Cena replied with a sentence that spelled out exactly why he was still keeping a steady schedule with WWE at the time:

“I’m still here because you can’t do your job.”

John Cena was making it clear that he was waiting for someone to take up his mantle so that he would no longer be needed.  He mentioned that he used in last reign with the United States Championship to give a larger stage to wrestlers like AJ Styles and Kevin Owens and that he has not main-evented WrestleMania is five years (make it seven now).  John Cena did not need to explain himself, but he was right.  The way he performed in his last runs in the WWE shows that he wanted nothing more than to solidify the future of the company.

Roman Reigns has valiantly tried to fill Cena’s shoes, but in the time since the Cena/Reigns promo, the entire WWE roster has performed as if John Cena was pointing the gun at all of their heads that night in August 2017.  Need proof?  How many sources beyond this article are even mentioning John Cena as WrestleMania approaches?

Reigns was doing his job to the very best of his ability, and it has resulted in a first-ballot hall of fame career.  However, the roster as a whole has taken up Cena’s mantle.  The women’s division has not only produced the hottest act in wrestling in Becky Lynch, but Lynch, Charlotte Flair, and Ronda Rousey are about to receive the ultimate validation in the form of the WrestleMania main event.

NXT is so marinated in talent that they could no longer keep Ricochet, Aleister Black, Johnny Gargano, and Tommaso Ciampa at Full Sail and out of WrestleMania season.  WWE seems to have admitted that the in-ring performances of workhorses must be rewarded as Rey Mysterio and Andrade have been given main event stages recently, not to mention Seth Rollins and KOFI KINGSTON are about to headline “The Showcase of the Immortals”, both having full investment of the fans.

The WWE roster is packed with established performers who could be legitimate contenders for a main event championship with the right angle to propel them.  It can be overwhelming at times, and can leave fans wondering why their respective choice is not getting that main event push at the moment.  For the WWE, this is the best problem you could have, and is the exact problem John Cena wanted to leave WWE with.

The rotating door of possibilities at WWE’s disposal has made John Cena a deeply-appreciated, but newly-unnecessary performer.  The WWE roster is doing its job.  John Cena can rest easy during WrestleMania this year, and possibly every year.
