Women’s wrestling has been undergoing a massive transformation in the WWE over the past few years, but at this year’s WrestleMania, it is likely to reach an all-time high with what many assume will be the first women’s match to ever main event ‘The Show of Shows.’

The women’s evolution has been taking the WWE by storm over the past few years to the point where we’re likely only a little over a month away until women will main event WrestleMania for the first time ever.

Just because women are now finally getting the opportunity to shine on the biggest stage in the industry doesn’t mean there haven’t been some outstanding women’s matches in WrestleMania history in the past.  Here are the five greatest women’s matches in WrestleMania history.

5. Mickie James vs. Trish Stratus: WrestleMania 22

It could be argued that one of, if not the greatest women’s competitor in WWE history is Trish Stratus.  The now WWE Hall of Famer transformed from an eye candy manager to a force to reckoned with in the annals of women’s wrestling history.

However, her WWE in-ring career was winding down by 2006 and at that time, Trish found herself in a feud with a newcomer the likes of which she had never seen before.

Mickie James was the new kid on the block, so to speak, and she was involved in a storyline in which she was obsessed with Trish to an unhealthy and unusual level.  The two would end up locking horns on the grandest stage of them all.

WrestleMania 22 saw Trish defend her Women’s Championship against James in one of the most underrated, yet greatest, women’s matches in WrestleMania history.  James had a psychological advantage over Trish throughout this feud with extremely unorthodox behavior, and a lot of that carried over into this big showdown where James would reach her career breakthrough.

James proved to be a legit threat to Trish and that paved the way for a huge win at WrestleMania 22 in which James won the Women’s Championship.

This was the start of a career in which James would become a six-time Women’s Champion in the WWE along with a few other stops in different promotions along the way.  And wouldn’t you know, James is still around to this day in the WWE.

For what would develop into a Hall of Fame-caliber career, this win at WrestleMania 22 would get it all started for James in one of the best women’s matches in WrestleMania history.
