Tony Nese has earned everyone’s respect

It wasn’t too long ago when Tony Nese was viewed as a joke by WWE fans and as a weak link on the 205 Live roster. But this had more to do with how Nese was presented as a character. WWE made him a stereotypical jock character, and fans just aren’t interested in booing someone who is scared of candy or more enamored with their own abs than actually winning matches.

Nese has completed changed his attitude, but the seeds began last summer before his push as Buddy Murphy’s workout partner in the fall. After organically building Nese into a threat, 205 Live has turned Nese into an excellent challenger for Murphy’s Cruiserweight Championship at the Show of Shows.

With his performance against Cedric Alexander in the finals of the tournament, Nese showed the WWE Universe that he is truly championship quality right now. The match was well-received by the Indianapolis crowd, despite the fact that they may have been emotionally drained by watching a SmackDown Live episode that included Kofi Kingston getting screwed over yet again by Vince McMahon – as well as a heel-building win for Mike Kanellis over Akira Tozawa earlier on the show.

Both Nese and Alexander pulled out all the stops in their match, producing several creative spots, including a double-superkick impasse and a really nifty transitional kip-up from the highly athletic Nese. With the way Murphy has wrestled on Pay Per View as champion, it’s safe to see he and Nese are capable of tearing the house down at WrestleMania.
