It’s a great way to wrap-up Murphy’s reign

Buddy Murphy suffered losses to Cedric Alexander and Mustafa Ali in 2018 before becoming champion, but after winning the title against Alexander in his hometown of Melbourne at WWE Super Show-Down in October, Murphy had both of their numbers. And now with Ali gone, the number of top challengers for Murphy’s title has dwindled.

Right now, Nese, after defeating Alexander in a thrilling encounter, is the strongest competitor, so it’s only fitting that he’s facing Murphy at WrestleMania. It’s the perfect way for Murphy’s excellent reign as champion to end, especially because of the history between both competitors.

Murphy and Nese are close friends and workout partners, but the subtext of their on-screen relationship is that Murphy only keeps Nese close since he views him as an easy opponent. Alexander brought this up before his finals match against Nese, planting a seed that could be used in the build to WrestleMania.

Of course, Murphy proved Alexander’s words right by attacking Nese from behind after initially celebrating his friend’s victory. Nese needs to get his comeuppance on a man who has run through the entire Cruiserweight Division, Alexander and Ali included. The face turn has been a long time coming for Nese, so now he needs to make good on the momentum with a WrestleMania title victory.
