WWE: Kofi Kingston may need to put his career on the line for the title
Last Tuesday night, Kofi Kingston’s attempted to achieve his dream of winning the WWE Championship at WrestleMania. Despite winning the originally scheduled Gauntlet match, Kofi’s dreams were crushed.
After watching Kofi compete in the ring for an hour on WWE SmackDown, Daniel Bryan became a last minute entry into the match and swiftly put a stop to KofiMania’s chances of coming to fruition.
Backstage after the show, The New Day cut a rather interesting promo together.
In said promo, Xavier Woods and Big E both contemplate leaving WWE while Kofi Kingston opts against it. Why? Because if they walk away, “then Vince wins. Then Daniel Bryan wins.” It almost echoes a sentiment originally echoed by Michelle Obama: “When they go low, we go high.” The obvious metaphor being not to let them knock you down, but keep getting up with each passing blow with perseverance.
This feels like a key moment of foreshadowing for the trio in this storyline, especially for Kofi Kingston.
As often as Kofi has been kept out of the main event picture – both in recent memory and over the past 11 years – one thing that the former Intercontinental Champion still holds near and dear to him is his career. He has more tenure than the average WWE Superstar, especially for one who isn’t stapled to the main event picture. We’ve heard Kofi talk about how blessed he is to use this job to provide food on his family’s table, even though he’s too busy wrestling on the road to share a meal with them.
Regardless of whether he ever wins a WWE Championship or not, he probably has a job for life with the company out of sheer loyalty if he wanted. It is a career that few come across and it is a career to be proud of.
Which is why Kofi Kingston may have to put his career on the line to make KofiMania happen.
Maybe not intentionally. For someone who is actively aware that he needs a job like this to provide for his family, it would be reckless to offer his career as collateral. However, if Kofi’s run with The Authority is anything like Bryan’s from five years ago, then Kofi will likely keeping knocking on Vince’s door for a fair shot at the title until he gets what he wants, no matter how often he gets knocked down or out by Vince’s muscle.
Eventually, Vince, Bryan and Co. are going to get sick of hearing The New Day buzzing in their ears like flies, so the head honchos will give Kofi Kingston an ultimatum: he’ll get his WWE Championship match at WrestleMania, but he must put his career on the line in a Title vs. Career match against Daniel Bryan.
I could be completely off base on this one. We’ll have to wait and see what really happens on this coming Tuesday, but as long as it gets Kofi to the big dance and it gets him the possibility to win the big one, then this theory might just be crazy enough to work.
