Last Man Standing Match: Drew McIntyre vs. Dean Ambrose

It was then time for the main event of WWE Raw where Dean Ambrose looked for revenge from his devastating Falls Count Anywhere loss to McIntyre a few weeks ago. Drew McIntyre was also looking for another huge statement on his path to Roman Reigns at WrestleMania.

Things got off to a fast start and the action spilled right to the outside, a familiar sight for McIntyre and Ambrose. The Scottish Psychopath took control and looked for an early win, allowing a lengthy count after throwing Ambrose into barricades at ringside. Dean refused to go down though, getting up before the count of ten and keeping the fight alive.

After a commercial break, we came back to Ambrose flying off the top rope only to receive a kendo stick right in the gut from Drew McIntyre. It was followed with a series of strikes that broke the kendo stick, and McIntyre even trying to gouge Ambrose’s eye out with the broken kendo stick.

Things spilled back outside the ring, and a slingshot that guillotined Ambrose under the ring still wasn’t enough to keep him down. McIntyre introduced a chair to the action, getting in the ring and wedging it in the corner. He threw Ambrose towards it, but Dean slipped away and dodged a charging McIntyre that sent Drew into the very chair he’d introduced.

Dean Ambrose followed that moment with Dirty Deeds and looked to have his best chance of a victory, but McIntyre wouldn’t stay down. Ambrose hit him with a big boot before going to the outside and getting a table. Back in the ring, Ambrose propped the table up in the corner. He turned away from the table only to immediately be caught by McIntyre and driven through the table with a spinebuster.

Somehow, despite this damage, Ambrose still struggled to his feet before the count of ten, but was caught with a devastating Claymore that finally put things to bed. The referee counted, and though Ambrose struggled a bit and squirmed, he couldn’t get to his feet. WWE Raw ended with Drew McIntyre once again standing over the fallen body of one former member of The Shield.

Grade: A+, Another great match from these two that had good wrestling, told a good story, and some well-executed hardcore spots. This series of matches has made McIntyre perhaps the most viable main event threat that isn’t a former champion, and his match with Roman Reigns looks to be a huge marker of each man’s future in WWE.

WWE Raw Gut Reactions

  • Rousey’s mic work still feels forced, but her natural heel heat helps make up for it. The crowd loves to hate her.
  • The Beat the Clock Challenge was fun, but felt sort of silly with the only reward being “momentum.”
  • Bobby Lashley really sucks at winning handicap matches.
  • The timing on Aleister Black’s entrance was wrong yet again this week, which is infuriating considering it’s been perfect in NXT for so long.
  • Aleister Black and Ricochet remain a really fun tag team, despite being such vastly different competitors.
  • Drew McIntyre needs to make up his mind. Does he want Roman to fight him or want him to choose not to fight him?
  • It was so awesome see the Glam Slam again. Shout out to Hyan, who you can see at Shimmer Weekend on 3/30 and 3/31, who also uses the Glam Slam.
  • Michael Che and Colin Jost are great, and they fit right in on WWE Raw.
  • Alexa Bliss is continuing to excel in her role as the soon-to-be Host of WrestleMania.
  • Baron Corbin may not have been the best authority figure WWE has ever seen, but he’s good at goading the crowd into classic heel heat. He does that job well, and it deserves some credit.
  • Seth Rollins remains one of the best talkers in WWE, maybe just behind the master himself Paul Heyman.
  • Samoa Joe’s headbutt to Kurt Angle was the perfect callback to their TNA confrontation in 2006.
  • Triple H’s mic work was almost perfect tonight. It would’ve been perfect if he’d literally broken into song with a rendition of “Wannabe” by The Spice Girls.
  • Drew McIntyre, through this series of matches with The Shield, has quickly become one of the most viable main event threats in WWE.
