Buddy Murphy (c) vs. Tony Nese for the Cruiserweight Championship

For the third straight year, the Cruiserweight Championship will be on the WrestleMania pre-show, but, for the third straight year, it should be one of the best matches on the card. Buddy Murphy has been just about untouchable in his run as Cruiserweight Championship, taking – and defeating – all comers. Since winning the title off of Cedric Alexander in his hometown of Melbourne at WWE Super Show-Down in October, Murphy has defeated the likes of Akira Tozawa, Mustafa Ali, Hideo Itami, Kalisto, and Cedric (for a second time) in title matches.

Murphy has been on the main card of Pay Per Views, too, putting on a classic against Ali at Survivor Series that was arguably a show-stealer. His bout against Tozawa on the Elimination Chamber’s pre-show may have been even more impressive, and it truly seems like he’s hit another level after a fabulous 2018.

On Sunday, Murphy must face a new challenge in Tony Nese, who certainly lives up to his moniker as “The Premier Athlete”. After being an afterthought in the Cruiserweight Division, Nese is no longer a jock stereotype or a joke; he is a legitimate No. 1 Contender who defeated Alexander in the finals of this year’s Cruiserweight Tournament. Nese’s best work has come over the past several months, and Triple H and Co. have booked his run to the title wonderfully.

In Nese, Murphy has awoken a dangerous man. Murphy has pushed all the right (in his case, wrong?) buttons in the build to this match, turning on Nese immediately after the latter’s win over Alexander and cutting promos essentially diminishing Nese as a performer.

Murphy’s reign has been lengthy – as it should be – but it seems like this is the right way to end it. His workout partner, Nese, is more than ready for his own run with the title after grinding on 205 Live since the brand started. Nese has come into his own as a performer in WWE, and there’s nobody else for Murphy to run through.

Prediction: Tony Nese
