WrestleMania XIV: Stone Cold Steve Austin vs. Shawn Michaels (WWE Championship)

At WrestleMania XIV, Shawn Michaels wrestled his last match for over four years. Having injured his back in a nasty bump in a Casket Match with The Undertaker at the Royal Rumble, Michaels seemed as though he would never be able to lace up his boots again. But for this, ostensibly his final performance, he put on an excellent show.

Michaels entered the ring to the music of the D-Generation X band, with Triple H and Chyna in tow. He also had an ace in the hole: ringside enforcer “Iron” Mike Tyson. With Michaels’ injury, he was unable to work the dynamic and technical classics he was known for, but he adjusted rather well to Austin’s favored brawling style. The DX band’s musical instruments were used as weapons as the chaos spread through the arena.

At the match’s finish, Michaels attempted a Sweet Chin Music, which Austin ducked and countered into a Stunner attempt. Michaels subsequently pushed Austin into the ropes and attempted another Superkick, but this time Austin caught Michaels’ leg, spun him around, and landed the Stunner. Tyson rushed into the ring to count the pinfall and the Austin Era began in earnest.

As Austin and Tyson celebrated, Michaels returned to his feet, irate that his enforcer would betray him, only to be knocked out with a hard punch from the “Baddest Man on the Planet.” Stone Cold was unquestionably the top dog in WWE. If the Attitude Era can be said to have a definite starting point, this match is a strong contender. That historical significance can not be overstated.
