WrestleMania 32: Charlotte vs. Sasha Banks vs. Becky Lynch (Triple Threat Match for the WWE Women’s Championship)
WrestleMania 32 was a show that seemed to drag on forever, with absolutely nothing managing to stand out; except for this triple threat match between three women determined to steal the show.
Before the match, it was announced that WWE would be retiring the Diva’s Championship and reinstating the Women’s Championship, one of the first steps in their “Women’s Revolution.” This gave the match an additional weight, as the added dimension of a brand new championship belt gave the competitors a worthy prize to fight for.
Sasha Banks came into the match as the crowd favorite, accompanied to the ring by her cousin, Snoop Dogg, and decked out in gear inspired by her idol, Eddie Guerrero. Charlotte was accompanied by her father, the legendary Ric Flair.
The three put on an excellent match, with Banks hitting Carlotte with a Guerrero-style frog splash, Charlotte hitting a moonsault to her opponents on the outside. Becky Lynch, an accomplished performer even before her ascent in the last year, seemed to be on the cusp of victory when she hit Charlotte with a fisherman’s suplex from the top rope, only for Banks to catch her in the Banks Statement. Before Lynch could tap out, however, Charlotte threw Banks out of the ring and locked in the Figure 8.
The Nature Boy proved to be the difference maker in the match’s closing moments, as he held onto Banks to prevent her from breaking up the Figure 8. Because of this, Lynch was left with no choice but to tap out, making Charlotte the first Women’s Champion of the modern era.
This was the finest women’s match in ‘Mania history up to this point, and shines as an example of what WWE had been missing out on before they decided to invest in real women’s wrestling.
