WrestleMania 33: AJ Styles vs. Shane McMahon

The opening contest of WrestleMania 33 saw Shane McMahon put on a shockingly competent performance in a match with AJ Styles, a man who, at the time, held a legitimate claim to the title of best wrestler in the world.

In the aftermath of the brand split, Shane McMahon had taken charge of the SmackDown brand. Styles had turned heel the previous summer and came into conflict with his more level-headed boss.

While it has always been difficult to take the untrained Shane McMahon seriously as a competitor (he throws the worst punches in the business after all), he more than held his own here, locking in a triangle choke hold that Styles managed to powerfully counter into a Styles Clash, from which Shane managed to kick out.

Following a ref bump, a trash can came into play, with Styles mockingly attempting Shane’s signature Coast to Coast move, only for McMahon to smash “The Phenomenal One” in the face with the trash can. McMahon later attempted a diving elbow from the ring to the announce table, but Styles rolled out of the way, sending “The Money” smashing through the table.

In the match’s closing moments, Shane attempted a shooting star press, but Styles managed to dodge again causing Shane to land chest first on the trash can. Styles then performed his signature Phenomenal Forearm to end the match.

WrestleMania 33 was nothing to write home about, but this was a fun match that got the crowd hot for the rest of the night.
