WrestleMania V: Hulk Hogan vs. “Macho Man” Randy Savage (WWE Championship)

The explosion of The Mega Powers is one of the finest storylines that WWE has ever crafted. Even though Randy Savage was at the top of the card as WWE Champion, he still felt jealous and overshadowed by Hulk Hogan’s place on the card. Plagued by jealousy and self-doubt (he had, after all, won the belt with Hogan’s assistance), Savage eventually snapped, attacking Hogan and claiming that his former friend had secretly been lusting after Ms. Elizabeth for their entire partnership.

All this came to a head when Hogan challenged for the belt at WrestleMania V. The match was a classic, with Ms. Elizabeth adding to the drama by standing in a neutral corner, refusing to explicitly support either man. After a particular nasty spot outside of the ring, Elizabeth went to check on her husband, but Savage pushed her away, leading the referee to send her to the backstage area for her own safety.

Savage’s onslaught was relentless, constantly pummeling the Hulkster and choking him with his wrist tape. Savage eventually ascended to the top rope and landed the elbow, but Hogan powered out and, bleeding a bit from the bridge of his nose, proceeded to Hulk up and crush Savage with the leg drop to become WWE Champion for the second time.

Not a technical clinic by any means, but this match is incredibly significant to the history of professional wrestling. Hogan and Savage were the Austin and Rock of their day, and watching them battle it out on WWE’s biggest stage, at the close of one of the company’s finest ever stories, more than earns the main event of WrestleMania V its spot on this list.
