WWE: 3 Problems The Superstar Shake-Up Needs To Address
By Brett Grega
1. The Women’s Division Brand Split (Or Lack Thereof)
Becky Lynch is the sole holder of both the Raw and SmackDown Women’s Championships coming out of WrestleMania 35. She’s lived up to her moniker. She really is ‘The Man’ in the women’s division.
She’s also causing a major problem with the integrity of the brand split though.
For this whole Superstar Shake-Up to be worthwhile, there needs to be a brand split. It doesn’t make sense otherwise. That hasn’t stopped WWE from essentially tearing down that split when it comes to the women’s division however.
With Becky Lynch holding both titles now, and 1 set of tag team gold representing both shows, the brand split has, and could likely continue to be, nearly non-existent in the division.
WWE needs to clarify it’s stance on this during the Superstar Shake-Up. There’s no reason a brand split can’t exist with the current title slate, but a definitive stance as to why and how superstars besides the champions can appear on both brands needs to be given.
If it’s not, then this whole Superstar Shake-Up begins to look silly. Why would we bother caring about who’s on what brand if anyone can appear on any brand they want willy-nilly?
I think the long-term solution is to have a clear, viable rivalry for Becky Lynch on both brands, if title unification ever occurs, or to just split-up the main titles again at some point. The tag team division can then continue to operate in it’s own bubble without brand restrictions, or some rule could clearly be delineated that restricts only the champions to appearing across brands.
Really, that’s the only logical way for WWE to make sense of this situation. They can’t have superstars like Lacey Evans appearing on both brands for no reason when there’s allegedly a clearly defined roster for each show.
While this may be the least defined solution to one of the problems WWE needs to solve, it is a necessary step to ensuring that there are rules for the brand split that make this entire Superstar Shake-Up worth having.
