Kairi Sane and Io Shirai

Whether Kairi Sane and Io Shirai ascend to the main roster depends on the result of Sane’s NXT Women’s Championship match with Shayna Baszler (who we’ll get to in a bit) this Wednesday.

That match carries a stipulation that mandates that Sane will receive no more title shots against Baszler should Sane lose and while that seems to indicate a probable title change on this Wednesday’s webcast/broadcast, it could also serve as a swan song for the inaugural Mae Young Classic winner.

If Sane gets called up with her friend and Sky Pirates tag team partner Shirai, they appear to have a program with new WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions Billie Kay and Peyton Royce in place. After Kay and Royce, collectively known as The IIconics, squashed a pair of jobbers last Tuesday on SmackDown, Paige announced in a backstage interview that she would be bringing a new team in to challenge the Aussies for their titles. Sane and Shirai fit that bill perfectly.

With Sasha Banks and Bayley likely moving out if the title picture for a bit, WWE needs a team that can give those new belts credibility and with respect to those who get a kick out of The IIconics’ brand of comedy, they aren’t the duo capable of accomplishing that.

If WWE is looking for a new tandem to build this division around, then Sane and Shirai make the most sense.
