Velveteen Dream

Just like Bianca Belair, Velveteen Dream has all the tools. The former Tough Enough contestant has shown everyone that his talent is the real deal. In a world where things are rarely original; Dream has cemented himself as one of the most original and intriguing characters of this generation. He continues to build that character with each storyline that he’s placed in and gets that story over in his matches. At 23 years of age, Dream may be the closest thing to a prodigy in the WWE; but that doesn’t mean that WWE Creative is prepared to serve this character correctly to the mainstream audience.

WWE’s struggles with using minority talent is long and chronicled throughout history. Not only is Dream an African-American male, but his character is so nuanced that it would be difficult to see how WWE Creative would properly leverage him on the main roster. A close comparison for Dream would be that of Shinsuke Nakamura, an individual whose character was a fan favorite in Japan but has been marginalized into a joke of itself as a part of the WWE. If the creative team could bastardize that long standing character, one must be afraid what it would do to someone like Dream who is an image that many mainstream fans may not be ready to see.

As the NXT North American champion, it will be interesting to see what is next for Dream. He’s coming off a big win over Matt Riddle at NXT TakeOver: New York and even after he drops that title, would stand to gain from a run with the NXT championship. The WWE has an opportunity to take their time and work this character into one of the biggest names in the company, regardless of talent. Right now, that should occur on the NXT brand and keep him away from the creative teams that run SmackDown and Raw.
