WWE: R-Truth needs to be an accidental ‘Wild Card’

WWE’s new ‘Wild Card’ rule is a work-in-progress, but could be an exciting way of getting more match-ups while keeping the spirit of the brand split. Perhaps R-Truth could be an interesting way of giving Vince McMahon’s newest tweak some comedic relief.

I watch WWE to be entertained and for me, the best moments of entertainment come when WWE is being light-hearted. It’s no surprise, then, that R-Truth is one of the Superstars who brings me the most joy. His best moments have come when he’s confused with the audience being in on the joke.

Truth won the United States Championship earlier this year and continues to be a solid performer in and out of the ring. Whether he’s having “Dance Breaks” with Carmella, selling for the odious Lars Sullivan, or going toe-to-toe with guys like Andrade and Samoa Joe, Truth is doing what he can to be a versatile veteran on the SmackDown Live roster.

Vince McMahon’s “Wild Card Rule” is meant to be a serious way of bringing eyeballs to the product, as big names like Roman Reigns and AJ Styles, as well as one of the world’s best tag teams in The Usos, are all able to flip between brands. WWE Champion Kofi Kingston is also one of the “Wild Cards” who could appear on Raw and SmackDown Live. Along with Raw and SmackDown Women’s Champion Becky Lynch, they continue to be two of WWE’s best performers.

But the “Wild Card Rule” could benefit from some wackiness, because, uh, hello, the announcement itself was executed a little odd!

Again, wrestling, in my humble opinion, always benefits from silliness … just ask Bray Wyatt!

Speaking of Wyatt, remember when he accidentally teleported R-Truth? Imagine Truth showing up on the opposite brand on accident, inadvertently becoming a “Wild Card” Superstar.  This could tick off a heel, leading to an impromptu match and perhaps even manifest a title match.

Truth vs. WALTER from a May 13 live event was quite the surprise as a United Kingdom Championship match; it was the match we never knew we needed. It’d be hilarious to see Truth find himself in the middle of a big match just by making an innocent mistake. Or maybe I just want to see an “ab-off” between Truth and Seth Rollins, then Truth and Finn Balor on SmackDown, then Tony Nese and Truth on the same night…

But mostly, I want to see Truth showing up on Raw, interrupting Vince McMahon or Triple H, and then looking utterly confused when informed that he is not, in fact, a Wild Card. I’m sure the aloofness is all an act, though, precisely designed for Truth to find his way into matches he’d otherwise have no business partaking in. Tye Dillinger witnessed Truth’s manipulative brilliance on SmackDown Live last year, so imagine if R-Truth put his talent to use by randomly appearing to a nice, light-hearted pop on all brands. WALTER vs. Truth was a great teaser!

I don’t laugh enough when I watch WWE – I blame the cancellation of the Fashion Files for that – but Truth is one of those wrestlers who can still get a huge grin out of me just by being himself. Don’t underestimate the potential for lightening up the “Wild Card Rule,” because there absolutely is potential.

Even if this is just an excuse to see more of R-Truth, it’s still worth it. Seriously, sign me up. Leave me sports entertained and red in the face after a good-hearted belly laugh.
