5. Samoa Joe

I think we have to start with the obvious choice.

Having Joe lose the title as quickly as they did – and with the shoulder pinfall spot – seems like we were destined for a Joe/Mysterio program to drag through SummerSlam. Joe was not going to accept Rey’s tainted victory and that would be the basis for their continued feud. Add the window-dressing story of Rey’s son, Dominic, and this had all the makings of a multiple-month story arc.

With Mysterio now on the shelf, Joe is the natural selection to regain his position as US Champion.

The Samoan Submission Machine had a successful first run, holding the title for 75 days after winning a fatal four-way match with R-Truth, Andrade, and Mysterio.

Samoa Joe is nothing if not a consistent star. Joe’s brutal, physical fighting style makes his matches entertaining and he seems to have instant in-ring chemistry with whomever stands across from him.

I do not have a problem with Samoa Joe being a champion. I think he deserves to be a champion. I just don’t think this is the time to put the belt on him. It would seem like lazy writing and the easy way out. I hope WWE uses this opportunity to have Joe’s quest to grab the title thwarted, possibly by a new star.
