WWE: Becky Lynch was the MVP of Stomping Grounds

Last night at WWE Stomping Grounds, Becky Lynch entered the ring both at the start of the show and at the end to a raucous reaction, proving why she is still The Man.

WWE Stomping Grounds was a show that surprised audiences in more ways than one. Not only did the PPV manage to exceed expectations, but the show itself had a handful of surprises. Including a United States Title change and a special guest referee in Lacey Evans. But at the end of the day, the woman – or should I say Man? – who stood in the middle of it all once the dust settled was none other than Becky Lynch. 

At the start of the show, Becky Lynch successfully defended her Raw Women’s Championship against Lacey Evans for the second straight pay-per-view in a row. While Evans’ inexperience is evident – although she continues to improve with each passing match – The Man managed to produce a very good match with the Sassy Southern Belle. It made for a solid way to start the show, although this would not be the last time we would see either competitor that night.

Some hours later in the main event, Seth Rollins defended his Universal Championship against Baron Corbin with a referee of Corbin’s choosing. Since Rollins kept attacking every man to put on a ref shirt these last few weeks, Corbin chose a woman in Lacey Evans. Whether it was changing match stipulations or refusing to count, Lacey made it clear her intent was to screw Rollins out of his title.

For lack of a better term, the Universal Champion played damsel in distress to Corbin and Evans’ dastardly duo. By the finish, it was Rollins’ real life partner, Becky Lynch, who arrived to save the day, save Rollins’ title and even saved the match.

I say she saved the match because prior to the former Champ Champ’s arrival, the crowd was mercilessly booing the main event. “Boring,” “This is stupid,” and even the dreaded “CM Punk!” chants flooded the arena for about 15 minutes straight with no end in sight. Crammed in between those more disparaging chants were chants for “Becky! Becky! Becky!”

When the crowd finally got what they wanted, the crowd was electric for the match’s climax and seemed to be genuinely delighted with the finish. That, to me, showed that Becky Lynch’s star shined brighter than anyone else’s last night and it says a lot about the star power of Becky Lynch in itself.

It was not that long ago that one of my colleagues debated critics who felt as though Becky lost steam after WrestleMania. It was clear that Becky hadn’t lost steam then and it’s even clearer now that her entrances at the beginning and end of WWE Stomping Grounds proved to be two of the loudest pops of the night.

Compared this moment to someone in a similar spot some years back like, say, John Cena. John Cena may have gotten booed out of the building if he returned at the end of the night as critics ran with the narrative that he was being overexposed or overrated. With Becky, as she continues to sit at the top of the company, her cheers remain as naturally raucous as when she first became The Man.

Her popularity and love from the fans was enough to get the crowd invested in a match that they hated watching minutes before her arrival.

WWE Stomping Grounds was filled with impressive performances last night, but if anybody was worthy of taking a trophy for MVP of the PPV, it would have to be Becky Lynch.
