Rey Mysterio vs. Samoa Joe

This would be the third Pay Per View match between Rey Mysterio and Samoa Joe, who squashed Rey in front of his own son at WrestleMania 35. Since then, Mysterio avenged the defeat with some interest, defeating the sinister Samoan Submission Machine at Money in the Bank one month after also defeating Joe on Raw.

Mysterio is back in WWE after making his return to Raw on the go-home episode before Extreme Rules, as he missed some time with an injury. (The May Money in the Bank match against Joe was Mysterio’s last match.)

In his return, Mysterio lost to Bobby Lashley, who was building up momentum for his Last Man Standing match at Extreme Rules against Braun Strowman. As expected, Lashley did not prevail against Strowman, who appears headed for a major push of his own before SummerSlam.

Though Mysterio is 2-1 over Joe, it wouldn’t be out of reason for him to pick up another win over Joe at SummerSlam, seeing as how it’s hard to erase the pain of an embarrassing WrestleMania squash lost until getting that win back at an equally big venue.

The issue here is that Joe can afford a loss even less, especially since he fell in yet another title match at Extreme Rules. Per Fightful.com’s Sean Ross Sapp, Joe is now 0-8 in WWE Championship and Universal Championship matches on television/PPV.

Still, expect a couple of SummerSlam matches to be thrown-together, and this might be one of those where WWE has to come up with a creative way of presenting the right story.

With the way Extreme Rules was booked, I honestly wouldn’t put it past them to do just that; they’ve been getting it right on PPV this year.

Plus, if Joe does lose, maybe that sets him up for his biggest rage yet and a future date with Universal Champion…Braun Strowman? (Remember how awesome it was when WWE teased a feud between them after WrestleMania 35?)
