Randy Orton

Another participant announced for the match is none other than The Viper, Randy Orton, from SmackDown Live. Because, you know, Wild Card Rule. That’s still a thing, right? We’re still pretending like the brand split matters, right?

Anyway, this will mark the first time that we will have seen Randy Orton inside of a WWE ring onscreen since he defeated Triple H at Super ShowDown. Not being seen on WWE television in over a month should make him an unlikely candidate, but let’s not forget that he is Randy Orton and, therefore, will always have that star aura that comes with being Randy Orton. Plus, like Taker and Reigns, Orton has a pre-existing history with Lesnar that is primed for a title feud.

A few years ago at SummerSlam 2016, Lesnar and Orton squared off for the first time in over a decade. The Beast won, but not by pinning or tapping the former Legend Killer out. He busted Orton open until he poured like faucet. The ref had to rule the match a TKO. A rematch took place at a Chicago house show that Lesnar won by pinfall, but apart from YouTube footage posted by WWE, the rematch was never mentioned on WWE TV.

It might be time for WWE to revisit that feud onscreen three years later at the same PPV so that fans can get some actual onscreen closure from that rivalry. Just, hopefully, Brock doesn’t split Orton’s skull open this time.
