WWE took a step back with Braun Strowman on Raw
By Brett Grega
Braun Strowman’s match at WWE Raw Reunion was completely unnecessary. The company needs to book “The Monster Among Men” better.
WWE Raw Reunion was a mixed bag. On one hand, the 24/7 Championship continued to be brilliant, and it was certainly fun to see some of the legends back. At the same time though, the women’s division got nowhere near enough TV time, and a few of those legends segments never reached their full potential.
In the midst of all of that was some ole fashioned wrestling of the in-ring variety as well. While many of the matches worked as seemingly intended, there was one which just rubbed me the wrong way.
Braun Strowman had another exhibition match against a local competitor. That would be all fine and dandy if we were talking about the Strowman from a little over 2 years ago, but the Strowman today needs more than that.
We’ve seen “The Monster Among Men” ragdoll no-name competitors around the ring too many times to count at this point. We get it. Braun’s big and scary. He’s got freakish strength. Now, WWE needs to get him the only thing he’s missing: a storyline.
A little while ago, I wrote about how Strowman is a superstar to watch heading into SummerSlam. That still stands true. He really is directionless, yet obviously still in WWE’s plan to some extent or another. Let’s just hope that plan isn’t for him to run through varying numbers of enhancement superstars for weeks on end.
All I can say is that would be a major step back for Braun Strowman, and not the good kind of step back that gets you a 3-pointer and one. No, this would be the kind of step back that makes it seem like WWE is rebooting Strowman, something that does not need to be done whatsoever.
Coming off of a massive win at Extreme Rules in what was arguably the match of the night, Strowman should at least be destroying full-time roster members if WWE feels like these kinds of segments are needed again for some reason.
At least make them somewhat more entertaining and meaningful than just seeing how far Strowman can throw a guy. I’m all for squash matches, just make them appropriate for the level of competitor doing the squashing.
Put him in with No Way Jose or Heath Slater to make it a comedy bit. Have him take down an impressive ring general like Shelton Benjamin or Cesaro in dramatic fashion to prove how much of a force he is once again. Anything to keep it from feeling like this is back to square one for a superstar who has no reason to be there.
Braun Strowman is still very much a star for WWE. The company needs to make sure they don’t lose sight of that on Raw, or SmackDown for that matter, going forward by having him spin his wheels in the same segments we’ve seen time and time again.
