WWE SummerSlam 2019: Charlotte Flair vs. Trish Stratus is must-see
The July 30 edition of WWE SmackDown was a big night regarding the upcoming SummerSlam pay-per-view with a marquee, dream match made between two of the most decorated women’s competitors in WWE history.
Last night’s WWE SmackDown had plenty of SummerSlam implications, but none quite as big as what took place during the King’s Court segment hosted by Jerry “The King” Lawler in Memphis, Tennessee with special guest, WWE Hall of Famer, Trish Stratus.
It was announced that Stratus would be the guest on the King’s Court, but she wouldn’t be the only person to intervene on the proceedings. It started out as a healthy question and answer between Trish and The King, but it would quickly turn into a passionate back and forth once Charlotte Flair intervened and got in the face of the WWE Hall of Famer after the question was asked whether or not Trish would ever want one more match.
Charlotte had plenty to say, including how Trish couldn’t hang with her and that she was part of the diva’s era, an era that’s inferior to what Charlotte helped create. She capped it off by saying she should stick to changing diapers. Trish wouldn’t take that disrespect lying down, however, and she fired right back at The Queen with cold, hard facts.
She said the only reason Charlotte has had the opportunity to be a trailblazer because of the trail blazed by women like herself, Jacqueline, Ivory, Lita, and others. This all led to what most could see coming by the end of the segment, Trish vs. Charlotte at SummerSlam in a battle between two of the all-time greatest women’s competitors. Fans should get excited about this match given all of the different storylines in play.
Think about it, the argument can be made that these are the two best women’s wrestlers of their respective eras. Trish dominated and blazed a trail throughout the early to mid-2000s unlike any superstar before her, capturing seven women’s championships in the process before eventually being inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame years later. And then there’s Charlotte, a superstar bred for major success and a superstar that has accomplished just that.

Say what you want about her and how many opportunities she gets, but the reason she gets so many opportunities is because she earns them and knocks them out of the park every time. No women’s superstar has been more consistent or led the charge better over the past few years than Charlotte and, in turn, has captured nine women’s championships. Between Trish and Charlotte, these women have combined for 16 women’s championship reigns.
If that doesn’t speak to the pedigree of these women, nothing will. Many might be a bit skeptical of this match happening in 2019 given how Trish is 42-years-old, but she has proven in recent memory she is still capable of putting on a good match, which was evident with her performance at Evolution last year. She is still in tremendous condition and it’s safe to assume she will give a stellar performance, especially with Charlotte as her opponent.
This is a big match for Charlotte as well, who hasn’t done much lately when taking everything into consideration. Since the angle with Becky Lynch and Lacey Evans, Charlotte hasn’t had much TV time and creative direction. Having a big marquee match at arguably the second biggest pay-per-view of the year against one of the greatest of all-time puts The Queen back on track.
Nobody will ever know what this match would have looked like in years past when Trish was still in her prime, but even in 2019, don’t expect her to look a step slow or unable to hang. This match is bound to turn some heads at the biggest party of the summer and it’s one of those dream matches that fans talk about. It would have probably been better if this angle had a month to build rather than less than two weeks, but it’s still big enough as it is.
It’s the best of one era vs. the best of another era and in the WWE, that’s what fans love to talk about and in this case, they will get the opportunity to see it on one of the biggest stages in the business.
