WWE: Brock Lesnar doesn’t deserve a rematch for the Universal Title
Brock Lesnar hasn’t been seen in WWE since losing his Universal Championship, but does he even deserve a rematch for the title that was taken by Seth Rollins?
It’s been a little over one week since Brock Lesnar lost his Universal Championship to Seth Rollins at WWE SummerSlam 2019. While we haven’t heard directly from the former champion since his loss, we did get confirmation from his advocate, Paul Heyman, that there will be no rematch.
Paul Heyman, unsurprisingly, was less than thrilled about the news that his “Beast Incarnate” wouldn’t be getting an opportunity to regain his title. WWE did away with the traditional “automatic rematch clause” several months ago, a move that was met with mixed opinions.
Despite the potential for WWE to struggle without this storytelling device, the loss of this rule is actually working in our favor here. If things aren’t automatic, a potential rematch must be decided upon based on the former champion’s merits.
If a champion lost their title in controversial fashion, it would be perfectly reasonable to argue they deserve a rematch. If a match between two stars who haven’t faced off before was hotly contested, you could argue the score hasn’t really been settled between the competitors.

If those things aren’t true, it’s difficult to see why a champion would deserve that rematch. Instead, they’d have to earn their way back into the title picture like everyone else.
Unfortunately for Paul Heyman and Brock Lesnar, the former reigning, defending, undisputed Universal Champion doesn’t have a leg to stand on. This was far from the first time we’ve seen Seth Rollins face Brock Lesnar.
Their clash at SummerSlam was actually the sixth time we’ve seen Seth Rollins and Brock Lesnar compete against each other, and every single match involved either the WWE Championship or Universal Championship.
The issues between these two traces back all the way to the Royal Rumble in 2015 when Seth Rollins was involved in a triple threat match. Lesnar defended his WWE World Heavyweight Championship against both John Cena and Seth Rollins.
It was the first time Rollins was in the same ring as Lesnar, and it ended with an F5 to Rollins before Lesnar pinned him to retain his title. The man then known as “The Architect” got his revenge at WrestleMania 31 by cashing in his Money in the Bank contract.
Seth Rollins walked out as the WWE Champion, but he’d done so by pinning Roman Reigns rather than the champion Brock Lesnar. When Lesnar got a rematch at WWE Battleground 2015, he dominated Rollins only for interference by The Undertaker to rule the match a no contest.
Four years later, Seth Rollins got an opportunity to prove himself. At WrestleMania 35, he opened the show against Brock Lesnar with the WWE Universal Championship on the line. Seth Rollins left as champion, but only after a distracted referee gave him an opening to hit Lesnar with a low blow.
Despite his victory, Seth Rollins had resorted to underhanded and illegal tactics to capture the Universal Championship. Brock Lesnar actually had a legit claim for a rematch after that, but he instead chose to get that rematch by inserting himself into this year’s men’s Money in the Bank Ladder Match.
Lesnar left with the briefcase, and two months later he cashed in on Seth Rollins to once again become Universal Champion. At WWE SummerSlam 2019, it was finally time to settle the score.
In the weeks leading up to the match, Seth Rollins was viciously attacked by Brock Lesnar on more than one occasion. He walked into SummerSlam a battered and beaten man, but one that refused to quit.
When the match got rolling, it was clear that Brock Lesnar was firmly in control of things. From his regular trips to Suplex City all the way to swinging Rollins around by the tape covering his ribs, there was no stopping the champion.
Until there was. Except, this time things were different. Seth Rollins has beaten Brock Lesnar two different times before SummerSlam, but one time he did it by pinning someone else and the other time took an illegal low blow.
There were no shenanigans this time. There was no underhanded tactic tainting the win. Seth Rollins defeated Brock Lesnar with pure grit, determination, and skill.
Brock Lesnar wasn’t the better man at SummerSlam, and now he has to earn a title shot if he intends to find himself back in that picture. Brock Lesnar goes to the back of the line where he belongs, and Seth Rollins looks ready to move on to an even bigger challenge in Braun Strowman.
