The Sept. 3 edition of WWE SmackDown saw yet another gang attack on WWE Champion Kofi Kingston at the hands of Randy Orton and The Revival, a trio that has been in unison over the past few weeks taking out The New Day.

Last night’s WWE SmackDown was yet another example of what the trio of Randy Orton and The Revival is capable of after their attack on Kofi Kingston just a couple weeks away from Clash of Champions when Orton challenges Kingston for the WWE Championship.

The Revival has been in Orton’s back pocket over the past few weeks with Scott Dawson and Dash Wilder helping The Viper take out members of The New Day one-by-one.  It started with Xavier Woods a few weeks ago on Raw when the three injured Woods while Orton made Kofi watch the whole thing.  Big E wanted revenge for the actions of Orton and The Revival, but unfortunately for him, the numbers took over.

After a calculated sneak attack on Kofi, Big E was by himself when he took on Orton in a match on a recent episode of SmackDown.  Big E looked like he was in line to get the win over The Viper, but Dawson and Wilder interfered and cost Big E the match before the three took him out just like they did to Woods.  That set the stage for what happened last night when Orton was out in the ring boasting about what himself and The Revival have done over the past few weeks.

He upped the ante when he called out Kofi and said he doesn’t want to wait until Clash of Champions.  Orton said there would be no more sneak attacks, but as Kofi’s music hit, The Revival were attacking him through the entranceway.  Kofi tried to fend off the obviously-premeditated attack, but the numbers game was too much to overcome.  Orton, Dawson, and Wilder laid out the WWE Champion and capped it off with a super RKO.

The stage is set for Orton vs. Kingston at Clash of Champions for the WWE Championship, but the more underrated development surrounding this match could be the potential stable that could come out of it.  It’s been about a decade since Orton was in a stable called Legacy alongside Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase Jr., but in the early stages of this relationship with The Revival, it’s starting to feel similar to Legacy.

More from SmackDown

Legacy was a great stable for a while and the group helped Orton reach a level as a heel that not many have reached in recent WWE history.  The Viper was despicable, cold, and calculated, but the caveat to that was he always had backup in Rhodes and DiBiase.  The same could be said over the past few weeks with Dawson and Wilder, drawing more comparisons to Legacy in the process.

If this on-screen relationship continues to develop and is given a chance, it has the capability of becoming Legacy 2.0 in a sense.  It wouldn’t have to be a ripoff of Legacy, but in some ways, this new trio led by Orton could exceed what Legacy did a decade ago.  Think about it, The Revival is in a better position than what Rhodes and DiBiase were in back in 2009.  Rhodes and DiBiase were young, up-and-coming superstars that really weren’t viewed as legitimate threats at that time.

Dawson and Wilder are more legitimate in their own way right now than what Rhodes and DiBiase were in 2009.  The Revival is considered to be an elite tag team, but unfortunately just in the wrong era for tag team wrestling in the WWE.  Even at that, the duo is still considered to be a big enough deal.  Rhodes and DiBiase will probably ultimately have more singles success than Dawson and Wilder, but tag team success could go a long way too.

Orton is a more menacing heel when he has legitimate backup and now, he has that with The Revival.  Think about the damage Orton was able to do during his Legacy run a decade ago.  Now with two more serious threats in his corner, similar results could be pending where The Viper could find his sadistic side once again.  Only time will tell, but this potential stable has the potential to make a name for itself.

The Viper and The Revival are starting to look like Legacy 2.0 more and more as time goes on, and that could be the perfect recipe for success moving forward.
