WWE Clash of Champions 2019: Daily DDT Staff Predictions
AJ Styles (c) vs. Cedric Alexander – WWE United States Championship
Bassam Kaado: Alexander has been pulling out all the stops, and, though he had amazing matches, it doesn’t make sense in my mind to throw Styles under the bus. The OC’s momentum has been decimated and Styles needs to keep his credibility.
A loss to Styles will not hurt Alexander, but a loss to Alexander may put Styles in a weird spot. I would rather see “The Phenomenal One” lose in a multiple man match before chasing the top belt again. Give this man everything before he retires.
Bryan Heaton: Would WWE be so bold as to have Cedric dethrone AJ Styles? It seems like something well out of the ordinary for the company, even with rumors of Cedric being a favorite of Paul Heyman. Plus, I just don’t see that many championships changing hands in one night, and the US Title is one of the most likely to stay around the same waist it began the night around. In the end, Styles retains.
Chris Jeter: This feels like one of those matches where WWE will try to get someone over via falling short in a great match. It’s possible to pull it off, but WWE’s recent history shows that they don’t possess the deft hand to follow up on it, even though it would only take a few strong wins on TV. In that vein, I’m picking Styles to with thanks to interference by the Teen Drama Club (The OC).
Chris Schad: As someone who dove in headfirst to the inaugural Cruiserweight Classic, I’m thrilled that Alexander is getting an opportunity at a main roster title and to have it against Styles is something that’s even more exciting. Both wrestlers have a unique brand of offense and much like Styles vs. Ricochet last month, it could provide some fun spots.
In the end, the OC needs to get back on track after losing their tag titles and being Stone Cold Steve Austin’s rag doll on Monday night. While Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows are not on the card, Styles can make up for that and keep Alexander chasing for his first major title.
Joe Anthony Myrick: This one could go either way, especially with Cedric reportedly being high on Paul Heyman’s push list and the match taking place in the former Cruiserweight Champion’s hometown. I see a lot of stock in Cedric chasing Styles’ title a little longer since the feud just started some weeks, but I have a feeling the challenger pulls off an upset.
Mark Justice: I can see this match stealing the show. Their wrestling styles mesh very well and their in-ring psychology is off the charts. This is Cedric Alexander’s first championship match since joining Raw. A match against the phenomenal AJ Styles is exactly the opportunity he needs to show that he not only belongs in the title picture but also deserves to be a champion in the near future. Considering that the build-up to this match was rushed, AJ Styles should hold onto the championship for now.
Maysum Hudda: The OC has been through a lot lately, Gallows and Anderson losing the titles, Styles getting stunned TWICE by Stone Cold, and now AJ has to face one of the hottest rising stars on RAW. While Alexander’s recent performance has been impressive, AJ Styles needs a victory much more so I have Styles retaining via OC interference. Hopefully this feud continues as both guys have the ability to put on incredible matches and I look forward to this one on Sunday.
Ryan Anderson: This match, similar to Roman Reigns vs Erick Rowan, needs to build towards the
future. Styles has maximized the miles as United States Champion. Alexander has been portrayed as one of the next top wrestlers in WWE. It is time to conclude that ascension with a United States Championship victory.
There is no doubt that Styles can help cement Alexander by Styles losing this match. Having Alexander win this match and the rematch will make Alexander a star. It will also allow AJ to chase the WWE Universal Championship.
