WWE: “The Fiend” Bray Wyatt should main event Hell in a Cell.
Since his debut in 2013, Bray Wyatt has been one of the most compelling characters in WWE.
Bray Wyatt was once given the dreaded label, “he SHOULD be WWE Champion” by fans. There were losses at the hands of John Cena and The Undertaker at WrestleMania that followed which puzzled fans.
Wyatt’s character seemed to be incredibly resilient though. He would lose big match after big match, yet when the lights would dim and his music played, fans were drawn to him.
When Bray Wyatt went off TV in 2018 though, the character needed a break.
In April 2019, The Firefly Fun House vignettes would appear on WWE television. It felt ominous, but raised a bunch of questions. The first was “who was behind the vignettes?” The vignettes did an exceptional job in capturing fans attention. This is where WWE has an incredible grip on fans; their video packages are second to none.
Bray Wyatt was the man behind the Firefly Fun House vignettes. This made fans even more intrigued. It was a 180 degree turn from the dark Bray Wyatt character who was nicknamed “The Eater of Worlds”. This character had a striking resemblance to the character that Jim Carrey played in the show “Kidding.”
We then watched as the Bray Wyatt character slowly morphed into The Fiend. There were Easter eggs in each vignette that would spark speculation of what this character was.
The Fiend would appear on Raw to a massive reaction. Everything was different about The Fiend; the mask, the music, the way it was shown to fans, and the outfit Wyatt wore. It was a total transformation, and Wyatt knocked it out of the park. He had successfully taken his character, went on hiatus, and returned as a character that was more exciting than the one before.
After Seth Rollins was victorious over Braun Strowman, at the end of Clash of the Champions, The Fiend would appear and strike fear in the heart of Rollins. The next night on Raw, the match was made where The Fiend would wrestle Seth Rollins at Hell in a Cell for the WWE Universal Championship on October 6th.
The reaction to Bray Wyatt/The Fiend in the main event of Hell in a cell seemed surprisingly mixed. The idea of Bray Wyatt in the main event excited some fans. There was a group of fans who felt the main event spot for The Fiend was too much, too soon.
Here is what you have if you remove Bray Wyatt from the equation, and with no context, explained the challenger for Seth Rollins at Hell in a Cell.
- A character that gets a massive reaction from fans
- A believable champion who has been expertly portrayed by WWE
- One of the top performers in the last 5 years in WWE
- Arguably, the hottest character on Raw
- A top wrestler who has introduced a new character that fans are captivated by
If not Bray Wyatt, then who should Rollins face in the main event of Hell in a Cell?
As much as Rollins vs Styles would be a great wrestling match, it has been done already. Does Braun Strowman get a rematch? Seth Rollins just defeated Strowman at Clash of the Champions in the middle of the ring.
Raw has a phenomenal roster; the challenge is that no one is doing work on the level of Bray Wyatt.
Wrestling fans are a confusing bunch at times. Some of us spent the better part of the early 2010’s lamenting the fact that wrestlers like Samoa Joe, Tyler Black, Claudio Castagnoli, and AJ Styles were not given a chance by WWE. That was seemingly what would make some wrestling fans happy; top indy wrestlers wrestling in WWE.
In 2019, we have those very wrestlers in prominent roles, and fans still litter social media with frustration.
A good portion of us would get on Twitter to vent about how Bray Wyatt wasn’t used correctly. Some of those same fans that wanted Wyatt portrayed as a sinister monster in a main event role 2 years ago are the same fans upset that Bray Wyatt is in the main event of a PPV for the WWE Universal Championship today.
WWE has struggled for years to develop a character is larger than life. Every character is now a brand with the rise of social media, and WWE’s success in mainstream America. Characters lack a certain level of mystique that they once had. With The Fiend being the perfect blend of The Joker and Jeff Pickles, Wyatt is as exciting as he may ever be.
They missed the boat badly on Bray Wyatt ever since Wyatt lost to Cena at WrestleMania 30. When WWE finally put Bray in the top spot, fans are too quick to find what’s wrong.
There is more value in celebrating that a character we all believed has unlimited potential finally arrived where we wanted him to be.
A character that provides must-see television, and is a capable of having a great match is in the main event of a PPV wrestling for the WWE Universal Championship. Isn’t that, as fans, what we all want?
If the argument right now is that the rise for The Fiend is too much, too soon then how many more vignettes or captivating moments do we need to see from? Do fans have a desire to see Wyatt work his way up the top of the card to “earn a main event spot?”
Enjoy the fact that Bray Wyatt successfully reintroduced a character that fans can’t keep their eyes off of. Wrestling can be much more fun when we enjoy what we have, instead of complaining about what we don’t
