WWE: 3 major questions that need answered after the draft
By Brett Grega
1. Who is the top babyface in the SmackDown Women’s Division?
WWE knocked it out of the park with Bayley’s heel turn on SmackDown. The balloon man stabbing, the new look, everything was done to a tee.
After capturing the SmackDown Women’s Championship, it was basically a foregone conclusion that Bayley would stay on SmackDown too.
She’s now joined on the blue brand by her longtime friend and partner Sasha Banks, along with Lacey Evans, to really round out the top of the SmackDown Women’s Divison.
Unfortunately, that brings up a bit of a problem. All 3 of them are heels.
A heel champion, especially one embarking on his or her first run as a heel, shouldn’t really be feuding with other heels for a title quite yet. There needs to be some solid babyface competition that said heel can run through to build up their villainous character.
On SmackDown, it’s hard to tell what that competition is going to look like.
Thanks to an extremely random trade, Alexa Bliss and Nikki Cross look like the top faces on SmackDown right now. They, however, are still very much preoccupied by a feud with The Kabuki Warriors for the Women’s Tag Team Championships, making it unlikely that either of them would be squaring off against Bayley in the near future.
That leaves Carmella, Dana Brooke, and to a lesser extent Fire and Desire, as potential lead babyfaces.
The most likely of those 4 to take the reins is Carmella. A feud between her and Bayely has already been teased recently, and she has the best track record of success amongst those stars.
The problem is that we haven’t really seen much of Carmella in any traditional matches lately. She’s been mostly preoccupied with the 24/7 Championship, meaning it might be ideal for her to beat some lower on the card competition before jumping back into the women’s title scene.
That just might not be an option though.
Dana Brooke has been frustratingly absent from WWE TV most of the time, despite having some impressive performances when she’s been seen.
Meanwhile, Fire and Desire are still basically heels. Mandy Rose doesn’t seem like she has the kind of character meant for a face run anyways, leaving Sonya Deville as the better face option between the two.
While a Deville face run would certainly be intriguing, she would definitely need to pick up some singles wins before embarking on any title campaign, which essentially rules her out of the picture for the time being.
Besides, neither Deville nor Rose have picked up enough wins to look like real contenders lately, and their presence might be better used to provide depth for the tag division for the time being regardless.
In other words, a big push for Carmella might be needed, and needed fast, if WWE wants to fully capitalize on Bayley’s great heel turn. The burden will then be on ‘Mella’s shoulders to show that she can be the lead babyface that SmackDown is currently missing from their women’s division.
