In some late breaking news, we have learned WWE Women’s Tag Champs Kairi Sane and Asuka will both return to NXT for a title defense next Wednesday night.

As readers may recall, it was at WWE’s last Pay-Per-View, Hell in a Cell, that The Kabuki Warriors (comprised of former NXT Women’s Champions Asuka and Kairi Sane) pulled off a stunning upset against Alexa Bliss and Nikki Cross to become the new WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions. The two continued their momentum with a pinfall victory over Raw Women’s Champion Becky Lynch the following night, and then a win over Lacey Evans and Natalya in the following week’s main event match.

We are now learning that the menacing duo will continue their momentum by bringing their gold to the black and gold brand.

In a new tweet from WWE’s official Twitter account, NXT General Manager William Regal confirms that Tegan Nox (who returned to the show from injury last week) and Dakota Kai will take on Shayna Baszler’s best buds Marina Shafir and Jessamyn Duke in a match to the determine the number one contender’s to the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship. Those titles will be defended on NXT next week.

When WWE first introduced their Women’s Tag Titles, they promised that they would be defended across all of the brands. Nearly a year later, they have not quite kept that promised as NXT has been kept out of the loop entirely. But now, it looks like this will be the first step WWE will take to rectify this oversight of USA Network’s new show.

This will also serve as a homecoming for both Asuka and Kairi Sane. Asuka has not been seen on NXT TV since vacating her NXT Women’s Championship in Sept. 2017 before her main roster call up. Meanwhile, Kairi Sane’s last match was when she failed to recapture the title from Shayna Baszler during a Apr. 17, 2019 episode of NXT before her own call-up.
