WWE releases Konnor and Viktor of ‘The Ascension’
WWE announced the releases of Luke Harper and Sin Cara, who had requested releases earlier this year, on Sunday afternoon. They have also announced a parting of ways with Konnor and Viktor, who comprised the seldom-used tag team “The Ascension”.
In NXT, Konnor and Viktor were a force. “The Ascension” looked like they were going places when the debuted on the WWE main roster, as they were former NXT Tag Team Champions and had a menacing feel about them in the ring.
But then JBL buried them by calling them a knock-off of the Road Warriors – because of course he did – and then they were toast. They’ve been jokes in the tag team division since and have never tasted a bit of success inside the ring.
So that’s why it comes as no surprise that they’ve joined Sin Cara and Luke Harper to be the latest WWE superstars to receive their walking papers on Dec. 8. Konnor and Viktor will hope for a fresh start in 2020 and will presumably be eager to show the wrestling world what they can do either on their own or with a company that has faith in their talent.

WWE’s had a glut of talent on its rosters, and Konnor and Viktor didn’t really have a place to carve out a niche with the promotion. Wrestlers like them, Sin Cara, and Luke Harper should find opportunities elsewhere to shine, so this move could prove to be beneficial for all parties, especially if they can get fair compensation. Money seems to be the biggest advantage to WWE.
Konnor and Viktor are solid in the ring, but they truly shine in the comedy department. They had some memorable skits with Tyler Breeze and Fandango in the “Fashion Files”, slowly endearing themselves to both Breezango and wrestling fans after initially being an annoyance. Hopefully, they can find a way to put their promo and improv skills to good use.
