AEW: Cody Rhodes interested in signing newly released WWE talent

WWE recently released a bevy of their talents a couple of weeks back and already, it seems like the folks at AEW already have their eyes on one: a former Intercontinental Champion, no less.

Some weeks back, WWE granted releases for former Superstars Sin Cara, Konnor and Viktor of The Ascension, and Luke Harper. One of these names have already piqued the interest of AEW from the sounds of it.

It’s not Sin Cara, as he has already found a home in AAA under his new name, Cinta de Oro (although, given All Elite Wrestling’s working relationship with AAA, let’s not completely rule out an AEW jump from him just yet).

Meanwhile, The Ascension have already been taking a few bookings at independent wrestling shows (though, of course, it’s still early so you never know if they’ll make an Elite jump, even if no execs from that side of the world has expressed vocal interest in them yet).

That leaves out former Intercontinental and Tag Team Champion, Luke Harper.

While speaking on Sportskeeda’s official podcast, Dropkick DiSKussions, Tom Colohue mentioned that he how AEW Champion Chris Jericho has spoken in multiple interviews about wanting Luke Harper to sign with his company. Even if Harper doesn’t have final say in the manner, there is at least interest on behalf of the World Champion, and apparently, that interest is shared with AEW Executive Vice President Cody Rhodes.

In a recent conference call, Alex McCarthy of talkSPORT fame asked Rhodes if he was interested in signing Luke Harper to AEW and the businessman had this to say:

Interesting indeed. Cody certainly sounds eager to sign Harper. Even if he doesn’t say it outright, the quote “He’s a name that when you hear they’ve asked for their release, you think about that and the next steps” is a particularly striking phrase.

Now that both AEW’s top champion and exec have expressed their love and interest in Harper, this is certainly an interesting situation to keep an eye on and something to give AEW fans a reason to tune into Dynamite over the next few weeks, if only to see if a wild Harper appears.
