AEW Champion Chris Jericho cites Darby Allin as modern Jeff Hardy
AEW World Champion Chris Jericho sees a bright future in young Darby Allin, as he says Allin is reminiscent of former WWE Champion, Jeff Hardy.
In its infancy, as All Elite Wrestling continues to grow a following, one wrestler who has stood out better than most competitors who hadn’t made a name for themselves elsewhere (i.e. WWE) is Darby Allin. Allin entered AEW as a small, under the radar performer (most notable for some EVOLVE appearance), but was able to go viral after riding down the ramp on a skateboard.
The biggest spotlight of his career shined on Allin when he faced Chris Jericho for the AEW World Championship on an episode of Dynamite. Even in a losing effort, Allin earned some high praise from critics and fans alike. Jericho himself continues to speak candidly about him in interviews.
While making an appearance on the Keepin’ It 100 podcast (per a report from Fightful), Jericho had some high praise for the skateboard riding son of a gun. He took notice to how fans (kids and women specifically) are already wearing his face paint and dressing up like him after Allin’s received only a few weeks of air time so far.
Between Allin’s promo work, crowd surfing and performances against himself and (more recently) Jon Moxley, Jericho says Allin “went from nothing to a legit made star in less than two months.” Jericho also adds that Darby Allin “reminds me a lot of Jeff Hardy. He’s got an x-factor to him. Get into a room or a ring with that guy, he’s got a presence.”
It’s not hard to see the similarities between Hardy and Allin, as both are never-say-die underdogs who etched a cult following from fans who latched onto their daredevil antics.
Hardy was able to scratch and claw his way to a WWE World Championship win. Can Allin use this momentum to win the AEW Championship one day?
