WWE legend Edge retired from in-ring competition in April of 2011 after a serious neck injury, and while the rumors of a return have been their strongest late this year, the Rated R Superstar has gone out of his way to shoot them down again.

In October, PWInsider.com reported that Edge was in Pittsburgh, which they linked to a visit with the head of WWE’s medical department, Dr. Joseph Maroon. Citing rumblings of an in-ring return for “special appearances”, the dots were thus connected.

And on Dec. 19, PWInsider.com’s Mike Johnson wrote in his mailbag feature that he believes Edge will actually return, pointing to the Royal Rumble on Jan. 26 as the possible date. Johnson referred to a new contract with “a pretty nice upside” and persistent internal talk as evidence of a possible – and shocking – in-ring return by the Rated R Superstar.

However, Edge has once again shot down these rumors in a straightforward and firm manner.

Sportskeeda reporter Tom Colohue had this to say about the rumors of Edge returning to the ring, quoting the Ultimate Opportunist’s tweet while doing so.

We’ve consistently heard rumors about Edge returning to the ring over the years, only for them to amount to nothing. Beyond that, while most fans would pop at seeing him back wrestling, they would also probably be worried sick about one of their favorite wrestlers of all-time getting seriously hurt. We all know that Edge’s neck is in bad shape, and the worst possible thing would be seeing one of our favorite wrestlers in a scary incident.

PWInsider is one of the most reliable outlets when it comes to reporting news, so fans will likely still monitor what’s going on with Edge, perhaps arguing that he’d always deny the rumors to keep things a surprise.

But it’s best to heed Edge’s firm words, know that he won’t return to the ring, enjoy the current full-time wrestlers each week, and let the rest take care of itself. If he does make a shock appearance on his own terms, then more power to him. And if that’s not a possibility due to his neck, then we should be at peace with that.
