WWE scrapped the whole concept of show/brand general managers last year, but could AEW try to put their own twist on the pro wrestling trope in 2020 with a wrestling legend?

AEW’s first few months of television have been a success, and their Pay Per Views continue to sell out in the blink of an eye. Their upcoming show in February, Revolution, for example, sold out within an hour.

Cody Rhodes, Brandi Rhodes, and the rest of The Elite seem to be willing to try new things, and 2020 should be a year of experimentation for AEW. It’ll be a massive year for AEW, as they’ll need to keep rapidly growing the brand on Wednesday nights.

According to a report from WrestleVotes, AEW is considering adding a commissioner to Dynamite. WrestleVotes mention ECW legend Taz as somebody to watch closely if the promotion does decide to go this route, as they note he’s finished up his duties with CBS Radio.

Taz and Michael Cole formed a legendary announcing duo on SmackDown back in the day, and Taz is one of the most beloved figures in the wrestling business. Commissioner type characters really only work when the audience respects them, since heel authority figures like Baron Corbin or Stephanie McMahon become grating, especially if they aren’t tongue-in-cheek authority figures like Commissioner Regal.

Daniel Bryan was a very popular GM on SmackDown in late 2016, so perhaps Taz could have that same sort of impact on AEW Dynamite.

However, it may be best for AEW to table this idea. It may be worth trying out, but wrestling fans don’t seem to care much about commissioners. Still, in their case, it could provide some clarification on storyline details, since Kenny Omega recently said, in character, that he can’t book matches, yet this confused fans since he is an actual executive in the company. Having an on-screen leader could clear things up, but this is a potentially risky venture.

Regardless, this is all speculation at this point and unlikely. Even WrestleVotes remarked that they are “not sure” this idea is actually put into action by AEW. But it’s definitely a worthy talking point, since it could be a significant change to the broadcast. Taz is also a recognizable name in wrestling whose work commands plenty of respect.
