WWE: 5 Best Booking Decisions of 2019
By Mark Justice
1.) Kofi Kingston Won His First WWE Championship at WrestleMania 35
The Man, The Myth, The Legend: Kofi Kingston. He won the WWE Championship at WrestleMania 35 against Daniel Bryan and it was the best WrestleMania moment of the entire show despite not being in the main event.
On top of that, he retained his WWE Championship for six months straight against all incoming challengers, especially ones he had a lot of history with, such as the ‘envious’ Dolph Ziggler and ‘stupid’ Randy Orton.
Although Kingston may not even get another WWE Championship match in the near future despite his impressive six-month run as the WWE Champion, his championship win at WrestleMania 35 broke down racial barriers by showing that superstars who share his skin color can transition to the main event scene and succeed.
Now that he is relegated to the tag team division with Big E, many naysayers may assert that his entire reign was played out as a fluky Cinderella story to please fans for the short-term but disappoint them in the long-term.
Although this is a fair assertion, there’s no doubt that Kingston’s championship reign will be remembered for centuries on end. At the end of the day, a memorable babyface championship reign is what truly matters. Besides, when was the last time the WWE had a memorable babyface championship reign?
It is clear that Kingston made an impact on the WWE Universe in the past eleven years, especially for the underrepresented half of the community that rarely gets to see a black superstar win a main card championship in the WWE.
Nine months ago, I wrote: “No matter how hard someone like Kofi tries to break that glass ceiling and/or grab the brass ring, the glass ceiling will remain shatterproof and the brass ring will remain imaginary.”
In retrospect, it seems that I was wrong. Kofi Kingston made me believe and I strongly hope the racial barriers continue to be broken down in 2020 and the years thereafter because moments like these are what make WWE great.
Indeed, Kofi Kingston’s WWE Championship victory and reign was the absolute best WWE booking decision of 2019.
