NXT: Predicting the 2019 Year-End Award winners
Tag Team of the Year: Street Profits (Angelo Dawkins and Montez Ford)
In keeping with the theme of the other two categories, this was was tricky. But, again, avid WWE viewers tend to side with the babyfaces for any sort of voting, so picking the most over babyface team of the nominees – The Street Profits – is a safe bet.
Before getting called up and recast as, ahem, “super-cool” pitchmen on RAW, Angelo Dawkins and Montez Ford spent the first half of 2019 evolving from a fun opening act duo to one that can realistically challenge for and win tag team gold (at least on NXT).
The NXT creative team achieved this with a pair of competitive matches against the then-War Raiders and a ladder match victory at NXT TakeOver: XXV to win their first championships in WWE.
Sure, their title reign wasn’t particularly eventful and their loss to Bobby Fish and Kyle O’Reilly rendered them as placeholders more than anything else, but their brief climb to the tag team mountaintop remains one of the most delightful moments of the year.
Yes, their characters have undergone the usual Flanderization that often afflicts anyone who moves from NXT to RAW or SmackDown, but there’s a reason why Vince McMahon wanted these two on his program to draw in a younger audience and that was due in large part to their work in 2019.
