WWE SmackDown: Results, Highlights and Grades for January 3rd
Elias has a live performance
He lists his hopes and dreams for 2020, like Sami Zayn getting punched in the jaw and Shane McMahon going to Raw if he retains. He then calls Corbin an STD that won’t go away. He adds that The Revival need to change and asks everyone to watch the Royal Rumble with him on Jan. 26.
Speaking of The Revival, they’re backstage complaining about being sore from their Miracle on 34th Street Fight. He says in 2020, WWE and Elias need to put some respect on their names. They’re approached by Shorty G, who says they need to be like him and just embrace who they are.
Dash and Dawson look touched, until they suggest Gable played the New Years’ Baby. Gable says he isn’t bothered by short jokes. It’s “rise over size” and says he can do anything. Dash and Dawson say he can do anything except beat them, so Gable challenges Dash Wilder to a one-on-one match, which Dash accepts. And that match is actually … right now.
Shorty G vs. Dash Wilder
Lockup to start while Scott Dawson is on commentary. Wilder attempts a back body drop, but receives a headscissor, then a double underhook with a bridge pin attempt. Gable to the top for a moonsault, but Wilder climbs up for back suplex.
Wilder capitalizes with a camel clutch, but rather than make him humble, it motivates Gable to hit a bunch of uppercuts and exploder suplexes before cross bodying Wilder outside the ring. Back in the ring, Wilder turns a crossbody into a pin attempt, but Gable attempts an ankle lock, which also gets reversed.
German Suplex attempt by Wilder, which Gable turns into an Ankle Lock. Wilder immediately taps.
Winner: Gable
Grade: C-
Not bad, but also not crazy about it. Ended quickly and the outcome seemed predictable.
Immediately after the match, Dawson attacks Gable. He and Wilder hit the Shatter Machine right after.
Out to make the save is none other than a returning Sheamus!
Oh, I spoke to soon, as Sheamus hits Gable with a Brogue Kick almost immediately. Which is exactly how Sheamus returned from injury in 2015. Weird deja vu.
Still, Sheamus vs. Gable is an interesting match-up that I’m looking forward to seeing more of.
