NJPW: 5 burning questions we have after Wrestle Kingdom 14
By Sonal Lad
What can we expect from Jon Moxley vs. Minoru Suzuki?
When Jon Moxley first made his New Japan debut all the way back at Dominion last year, suddenly the fantasy matchmakers went crazy. A new company means new potential matches and, in this case, opponents we never thought Moxley would have a chance to wrestle. So, when Minoru Suzuki came out on Night Two of Wrestle Kingdom, everyone went crazy.
But what can we expect from a match up between Death Rider and the King of Professional wrestling?
To some outsiders or new fans, Moxley and Suzuki’s style might seem similar in the sense that it’s brutal and powerful. However, if you dig down into the nitty-gritty of each wrestler’s style, they couldn’t be more different.
Jon Moxley is known for his technical skills, but his unique selling point is this fearlessness, recklessness and madness that very few wrestlers in the industry have. We’ve seen him put his body on the line more times than humanly possible whether it’s through barbed wire, getting thrown into thumbtacks or having a Texas Death match.
On the other hand, Minoru Suzuki is one of the most technically sound wrestlers in the entire industry. Well versed in so many disciplines, it shows in the way that he wrestlers and for me, Suzuki’s success comes from his methodical approach to wrestling. He’s mastered the pure basics of the sport, especially when it comes to submissions, and has made them look effortless and stylish as he manages to counter any move and turn it into a rear naked choke, armbar or leg lock.
A complete contrast to Moxley’s more erratic and unpredictable style.
Unlike all of the other opponents Moxley has ever faced, Minoru Suzuki is in a league of his own. He has no regard for anybody’s well being and puts fear into everybody, whether it’s a young boy or a seasoned veteran of the trade.
Suzuki will find a weakness in Jon and exploit in like no other opponent has and top it all off with a picture perfect Gotch Style Piledriver. He doesn’t care for the name or the legacy Moxley left behind, especially when it’s nothing compared to the career Suzuki has built worldwide. Suzuki wants to cause pain and won’t hesitate for a second, whether it’s with a chair, table or his own hands.
Suzuki might be the only man who enjoys feeling pain more than Moxley and that’s a scary thought.
Moxley has made it clear that Minoru Suzuki was one of the main people in the company that he wanted to wrestle but and now it’s finally going to come true. Has Moxley written himself a death wish?
