WWE WrestleMania 36: Why a Becky Lynch vs. Asuka 3 needs to happen
Becky Lynch and Asuka are preparing for their Royal Rumble rematch on Jan. 26, but here’s why a third title fight between the two Raw superstars needs to happen at WWE WrestleMania 36.
After watching Monday’s incredible contract signing segment, there’s no doubt that Asuka and Becky Lynch bring out the best in each other. When Becky is desperate to prove herself, she is in her element. We hear the determination in her voice, the fire in her eyes, and the slightest touch of the internalized fear of her own greatness.
At Royal Rumble 2020, Becky and Asuka are going to tear down the house even more thoroughly than they did in 2019. Last year, Becky tapped out to the Cattle Mutilation before winning the Rumble and main eventing WrestleMania, where she picked up one of the two titles she still proudly holds.
This year, most people expect Becky to win and defend that Raw Women’s Title at WrestleMania against a seemingly logical Royal Rumble winner in NXT star Shayna Baszler. After all, the women from rivaling Four Horsewomen factions have a little bit of history dating back to Survivor Series.

But Shayna vs. Becky isn’t the best Raw Women’s Title match for WrestleMania.
No, it’s Asuka vs. Becky.
Yes, Asuka vs. Becky.
For a third time.
On WWE Backstage, Ember Moon said she hopes The Empress wins the Raw Women’s Title at the Rumble, surmising that Becky is better at chasing titles.
And she’s, as per usual, absolutely right on the money.
As great as Becky has been as a champion, she is indeed better at chasing titles, as she’s one of the best of all-time at this. Doubt me? Her incredible run to WrestleMania 35 was the result of a desperate title chase.
Even as a champion, Lynch is chasing something. But she’s chasing something bigger than a championship. She already has it. She’s chasing something bigger than the approval of fans. She has it. She’s chasing something bigger than the approval of management. She doesn’t want it.
What she wants more than anything else, though, is to prove to herself – not the world, the noise of everything outside her own head is irrelevant to her –that she’s unequivocally the best. And for everything she’s accomplished as the champion and current face of Monday nights, beating Asuka is the final loose end. She is the final debt to pay.
So that’s why Lynch’s fire has been burning more intensely than ever before. It’s why she can get misted and still cut one of the best promos you’ll ever hear.
Lynch can beat Asuka at the Rumble and move on to face the dominant two-time NXT Women’s Champion Shayna Baszler, who ran through an entire division and rewrote record books for the Black and Gold brand.
But watch the promos, matches, and even the minor interactions between Becky and Asuka.
THIS is the WrestleMania-worthy feud for the Raw Women’s Title. There’s no other match that would feel like a bigger deal at ‘Mania than watching Becky and Asuka go at it. Asuka has already proved she can have a stellar WrestleMania match when she and Charlotte Flair stole the show two years ago in a SmackDown Women’s Title match. She can carry a championship on the Road to WrestleMania.
And Becky? My goodness, Becky can chase the hell out of that title, making the Raw Women’s Title the most valuable championship in all the land.
The magic between Asuka and Becky over the last several weeks has taken center stage in WWE, and it’s becoming clearer that fans simply don’t want this to end. If Asuka goes up 2-0 on Lynch at the Rumble and puts Becky into ANOTHER gear of motivation before WrestleMania, we could be in for a ‘Mania feud for the ages. Cross your fingers and get ready to buckle up.
