Edge started off a new decade in WWE with a bang as a shocking entrant in the 2020 Royal Rumble. Well, it was shocking to everyone except a few reporters, who read the tea leaves and predicted the “Rated R Superstar” could compete in Houston.

When Edge‘s theme hit in the middle of the 2020 Royal Rumble, everyone in Minute Maid Park and everyone watching at home lost their collective minds. Nobody thought Edge would be able to wrestle again after a serious neck injury that threatened his career, and it’s still a bit nerve-wracking to see him wrestling, knowing how rough his neck was.

But he’s been cleared to compete and had a WWE Royal Rumble performance for the ages, lasting until the final three before Drew McIntyre eventually won the whole thing.

According to a report from WrestlingNews.Co’s Paul Davis, Edge signed his current deal – which is a three-year contract with “significant money”, per WrestleVotes – after WWE learned that the Rated R Superstar was in talks with AEW.

Wild, huh?

Per the report, WWE were worried that AEW wanted Edge to make a surprise appearance at the “All Out” show last year in Chicago, so WWE got serious and offered more money than AEW.

That’s been the story ever since AEW has come into being. More competition, more money for wrestlers, and more craziness happening in wrestling, such as Edge’s return.

PW Insider first connected the dots on Edge making a shock return, and Edge did his best to downplay the rumors in order to keep the surprise. But it happened, it’s real, and Edge is reportedly scheduled for more appearances. (I mean, duh, he signed a three-year contract, right?)

It’s interesting to see how long this was all planned and to see that AEW had interest in another big name. Even though they didn’t sign Edge, it’s still great to see that 1) they had interest and 2) they were able to get Edge a better deal from WWE. It’s all about the wrestlers “winning”.
