It looks like Bayley has Naomi in her sights as her next WWE SmackDown Women’s Championship opponent. Here’s why we are certain that the match will be a classic.
On the last episode of WWE SmackDown, Naomi confronted and laid out the SmackDown Women’s Champion, Bayley, letting it be known that reclaiming the title is on the two time former champ’s mind. Bayley vs. Naomi has yet to be booked for a future show or Pay-Per-View event, but it is safe to say that this is our next title match that the WWE Universe can look forward to.
It is also a safe bet to say that Naomi vs. Bayley will be a classic, whenever the match happens.
Bold claim, yes. Usually, it takes years of revisiting, reflecting on and rewatching a match before we can confidently say it holds up enough to be considered a classic. To call a match a classic – or, rather, it has potential to be a classic – before such a match even takes place puts a world’s worth of expectations on that match.

But then again, this match in many ways already has a mountain of expectations. This is a match that certain sections of the WWE Universe (namely huge fans of Bayley and Naomi, respectively) have wanted to see this match for quite a long time now. After all, apart from some brief encounters in battle royals, tag team matches, and just two unaired house show matches in 2015 and 2016, Bayley vs. Naomi has never happened. Which is somewhat surprising.
All things considered, the allure of seeing a “never before seen” match-up carries enough weight to cater to a future classic. As does the fan investment, especially after Naomi’s Royal Rumble return went viral on social media, even exposing her to non-wrestling fans.
But all of these things merely just create high expectations. How could this be a classic, in terms of in-ring quality?
Truth be told, the in-ring quality itself should almost go without saying. There is a reason why Naomi is a two time SmackDown Women’s Champion and Bayley is WWE’s first ever woman to become a Grand Slam Champion, and it’s not just because of their popularity. It’s because they are two of the most talented, athletic Superstars on the WWE roster.
Thanks to their in-ring charisma, unique movesets and attention to in-ring psychology, both are incredibly dependable to have a great match with anyone on the roster. Putting such exquisite talents in the ring together offers the opportunity for a technical masterpiece with memorable spots.
Again, such high praise offers high expectations that could be difficult to live up to, but both Superstars are so talented that it’s hard to imagine them not living up to those expectations. Or better yet, exceeding them.
Needless to say, Bayley vs. Naomi is worth getting excited about.
