WWE: Roman Reigns vs. Goldberg is starting to look like the Universal Title match
For several weeks, WWE fans have been expecting Bray Wyatt and Roman Reigns to eventually be the Universal Title match at WrestleMania 36. But now, there are rumblings that this won’t be the match at the Show of Shows, leading to even more intrigue around where Goldberg fits in all this.
Bray Wyatt vs. Roman Reigns seems like a reasonable choice to main event WWE WrestleMania 36. The Fiend was one of WWE‘s hottest commodities in the Fall, and a match against Reigns would provide fans with some throwbacks to the Wyatt Family vs. Shield rivalry.
Furthermore, Reigns has been owed another shot at the Universal Title. He never lost the title, as he was forced to relinquish it in 2018 due to leukemia. Reigns vs. Wyatt would be an easy good vs. evil story, and Reigns winning the title back in the main event of WrestleMania would be a lasting image.
However, it looks like Reigns vs. Wyatt may not be the Universal Title match at the Show of Shows. According to Wrestling Observer Radio’s Dave Meltzer, via IWNerd.com, WWE wants to go in a “different direction” with the Universal Championship.
Now, this could be a red herring, or WWE could be more interested in a Goldberg vs. Reigns match at WrestleMania 36. Wyatt has seemingly cooled off as The Fiend, so he could drop the title to an even bigger name in Goldberg, who could get some fans interested in ‘Mania if they are looking for a nostalgia buzz. Goldberg and Wyatt will face off at Super ShowDown in Saudi Arabia this week.
Reigns vs. Goldberg would certainly be a big-ticket WrestleMania match with a star of the past going up against the biggest male star of the present. Plus, the whole spear vs. spear and former NFL player angles could add even more to this build as a marquee rivalry on Friday Night SmackDown. FOX would certainly love that.
The end result would be the same. Reigns would go over at WrestleMania and win back the Universal Title, putting himself in a position to have a year-long reign and head into WrestleMania 37 in Los Angeles as the champion. That would lead to speculation of Reigns vs. The Rock finally happening – and under the bright lights of Hollywood no less.
WWE fans should definitely keep a close eye on what happens in the aftermath of Super ShowDown, since Goldberg vs. Reigns is looking more and more like an option. Whether or not it happens or main events over the WWE Title bout between Drew McIntyre and Brock Lesnar, however, remains to be seen. The smoke is there, though.
