AEW Double or Nothing 2020: Early match card predictions
AEW World Championship Match: Jon Moxley (c) vs. Maxwell Jacob Friedman (w/ Wardlow)
Here we have it, folks. The main event of AEW Double or Nothing 2020. Cue Justin Roberts with a much more impassioned version of “main event.” Almost exactly one year before this event, Jon Moxley blew the roof off the MGM Grand Garden Arena by showing up and taking out Chris Jericho and Kenny Omega. Now, he walks into that same arena as the reigning and defending AEW World Champion.
There’s always a possibility Moxley has a title defense between now and Double or Nothing, after all, he is expected to be a “fighting champion.” However, I have no doubt his reign will continue into this event. Anyone who challenges him before will get the benefit of working against Moxley on an episode of Dynamite with the AEW World Championship on the line, but absolutely won’t be able to take it from him.
Which brings us to Moxley’s first big test as champion. Chris Jericho was clearly the bad guy in his rivalry with Moxley, but Jericho occupies a weird space in wrestling consciousness and in AEW as a character. Even as the heel, he would get cheered and fans would sing his entrance music every time he comes to the ring. He’s beloved and respected, despite his heel actions as of late.
That’s not the case with Maxwell Jacob Friedman. No one likes or respects MJF. Even his parents, proud as can be, called him a “jerk.” MJF may not be the greatest heel in wrestling today, though some would certainly argue that, but he just might be the most hated. Everything MJF does seems to get under everyone’s skin, and that was no different when he toppled Cody at Revolution with the aid of his Dynamite Diamond Ring.
With Wardlow at his side, and carrying the momentum of defeating Cody and likely some other wins between now and then, MJF could easily leverage his way towards a shot at the AEW World Championship. The crowd’s allegiances would be clear before the bell ever rang. Jon Moxley is their god, and he must smite MJF. The Moxley Era has only begun, and it’s not ending because some kid from Plainview, Long Island has a big bad bodyguard at ringside.
Prediction: Jon Moxley shoves MJF’s diamond ring down his throat and Paradigm Shifts him through the ring
