With everything that’s going on in the world right now, WWE SmackDown’s ability to make us smile was a difference-maker. And Sasha Banks and Bayley were once again a big part of that.

Even when WWE SmackDown was panned by the majority of professional wrestling fans as the promotion’s “boring” show, I still managed to find a way to enjoy myself during those two hours on Friday night. And my widest smiles came whenever I saw Sasha Banks and the brand’s champion Bayley on my screen, being silly and heeling it up like only two best friends can.

On this past week’s episode of SmackDown, Bayley and Banks didn’t have a live crowd to play their heel antics off of. But it didn’t matter. They still found a way to be hilariously annoying and full of themselves, cupping their ears to the boos that weren’t there and laughing at the empty chairs in lieu of a live audience.

It may have seemed silly, and that’s partly because it was supposed to be. It’s wrestling. It’s not serious. It’s for fun.

But it was also a little bit bigger than that. Sure, there were no fans in the WWE Performance Center’s seats, but WE were well-aware of what was going on. The show was, naturally, for our own benefit at home.

Everything feels so out-of-place and different due to the outbreak of this novel coronavirus, and so SmackDown had a different vibe with no fans.

But it meant something to see Bayley and Banks laughing away, mocking us at home, and doing their normal routine in the midst of something completely abnormal.

And most importantly of all, it made me smile. It made US smile.

I’m not alone among the fans who enjoyed watching Sasha and Bayley gloat after defeating fellow former Women’s Tag Team Champions in a WWE SmackDown match.

For many of us, getting to watch once-in-a-generation talents like Sasha and Bayley is a gift, and amidst all the worries about people vulnerable to the novel coronavirus dying and the potential financial impact of the virus to many, we were able to forget all that and bask in the light-hearted antics of two of the world’s best wrestlers.

Who said heels can’t bring smiles to people’s faces?

Even their post-match interview, in which they yelled at a random passerby, popped me.

Sasha and Bayley are two best friends who are at the top of their games, and they are enjoying life. They are having FUN out there, and you can’t help but absorb their energy and feed off it. And at a time when many of us are confide inside our house and stress eating, latching onto two friends enjoying each other – even if it’s just them being egotistical – gives us energy.

So, thank you, wrestlers of WWE, for all that you do. And thank you, Sasha Banks and Bayley, for making me smile on another Friday night.
