WWE: Mustafa Ali has been a light as an ally for independent wrestlers
By Dina Amanuel
WWE superstar Mustafa Ali was a light in dark times, doing his best to help independent wrestlers during a pandemic.
In times as scary, and uncertain as the ones we are living in, it is often easy to focus on the negative.
This pandemic has not only caused a myriad of deaths, but in an effort to curb the spread of the virus, many have been laid off, or have forced to take unpaid leave from their jobs.
Fear, negativity, and uncertainty has dominated our timelines for much too long. So today, I’d like to bring focus to a man that’s trying his best to be a beacon of light in times as dark as these, WWE superstar Mustafa Ali.
WWE Superstar Mustafa Ali has always fought to be an emissary of light, love, and hope in unpredictable times, and his actions during the current pandemic have proven to be true to nature for the Chicago Native.
As you can see in the above tweet, Ali was initially promoting a show by independent wrestling promotion, Freelance Wrestling in cooperation with Pro Wrestling Tees. The event, titled WareHouse Wars, was to be an empty arena wrestling telethon that was to be live-streamed and would allow viewers to donate to individual performers.
Unfortunately, due to a “Shelter in Place” edict passed by the Governor of the State of Illinois, Free Lance wrestling was forced to cancel the event:
The cancellation of the event would have meant that the independent wrestlers who were initially booked on the show would have lost said booking, and since the show wasn’t to go on, people would be unable to donate as had been the original intention. This would lead Ali to announce the following
Ali had initially donated to the wrestlers set to perform at Warehouse Wars , and upon the event’s cancellation, was quick to assure those who would have taken part that they would be able to receive said donation.
Independent wrestlers who rely on bookings to generate income are examples of individuals in the professional wrestling industry, that have been economically affected by the virus. Ali donating money to these wrestlers is an absolute class act, and something we can all learn from. Often times it is difficult to focus on what others are experiencing as we are usually ensnared by our own uncertainties.
Mustafa Ali’s actions teach that even in times of uncertainty such as these, kindness, and charity are still (and should be) possible. Difficult as it is to not focus on the negativity, we can all learn to ease others’ hardships by doing what we can, no matter how small that act may seem. Remember that even the smallest of lights can chase away the darkness, so let us all strive to be the light for those who need it, and chase the light for those who can’t.
