7. Concrete Crypt Match: The Undertaker vs. The Dudley Boyz (Great American Bash 2004)

Another match that’s easy to forget, perhaps because it’s so absurd that our brains have collectively blocked it out, was the main event of Great American Bash 2004. Paul Heyman was managing The Dudley Boyz at the time, and challenged them to do something that would “make headlines.”

To make headlines, they proceeded to abduct Paul Bearer and challenge The Undertaker to a Concrete Crypt Match. This two-on-one handicap match saw a full concrete truck at ringside rigged to pour concrete into a plexiglass pod that contained Paul Bearer strapped to a chair. The idea going in was that Bearer would be encased in concrete, and effectively murdered, if The Undertaker couldn’t win.

Before things even get going, Heyman decides to prove he’s serious and releases the concrete until it is up to Bearer’s ankles. As the match continues, Heyman spontaneously gets on the microphone to call The Undertaker a “bad dog” and insist he’s not “doing the right thing,” releasing more concrete if The Undertaker gets an advantage.

Bubba Ray Dudley eventually stops Heyman, insisting they can defeat The Undertaker. Of course, they don’t. After the match, The Undertaker approaches the pod as Paul Bearer screams that “only you can save me, Undertaker.”

Despite having won, Undertaker grabs a microphone and says “Paul, I have no other choice. Rest in peace.” Undertaker releases the concrete and kills Paul Heyman as the event fades to black.
