WWE: 5 Intercontinental Title feuds to watch while socially isolating
Rey Mysterio vs. Chris Jericho (May 1, 2009-Jun. 28, 2009)
While the shortest feud of my five, it also is one that packed a lot into eight weeks.
This rivalry began when Jericho was disqualified from the fatal 4-way match to determine a #1 contender for World Heavyweight Champion Edge (above) for throwing a chair at Mysterio (wait, a DQ in a multi-person match? I’m shocked!).
Jericho had his first shot at Mysterio’s championship at Judgement Day, though he was unsuccessful.
At Extreme Rules, Jericho would foreshadow the future stakes as he spent the match trying to take off Mysterio’s mask (it was a No Holds Barred match). Jericho ultimately countered a 6-1-9 by unmasking Mysterio who, while covering his face, was rolled up by Jericho for the victory.
This led to a mask vs. title match at The Bash, which Mysterio won with some trickery of his own. Anticipating Jericho going for his mask again, Mysterio had a second mask underneath (kind of like Kakashi from Naruto) that distracted Jericho long enough for Mysterio to capitalize and regain the Intercontinental Championship.
So while only an eight-week feud, there were three great matches filled with great storytelling. Further, this is Jericho we’re talking about; make sure to catch his promos both in this feud and the one with Chyna.
Out of all the feuds I chose, this one may have the highest stakes. A mask to a luchador is life; losing it/being unmasked is akin to losing a piece of yourself. Yes, I know Mysterio lost his mask late in WCW’s run, but he’s always been masked in WWE.
As we know with Jericho’s characters in WWE, having a championship is life. Losing a championship is akin to losing a piece of himself.
This is one feud that will draw you in and leave you feeling exhausted in just a short time.
That’s my list! What five Intercontinental Championship rivalries would you choose? What do you think of my selections and justifications? I would like to hear from all of you, and let’s all enjoy some good wrestling!
