Andre the Giant (2018, Length: 1h23m)

Honestly, this is probably the most important entry on this list for people to make a point to watch if they haven’t already seen it. This 2018 documentary about the life and career of the late great Andre the Giant was initially distributed via HBO, and was made in partnership by both WWE Studios and HBO Sports.

Anyone with HBO already had the opportunity to check it out via that avenue, but now it’s available for free for a limited time.

Anyone who has heard the legends of Andre the Giant, whether it’s because they loved him as a fan, or a cultural figure, or even for his role in The Princess Bride, will get something special out of this.

Fair warning, there are parts of it that are emotionally rough to watch. In the later parts of his life, Andre was in severe pain and struggled heavily with an extreme amount of drinking. It’s the most complete documentary feature on Andre the Giant currently available, and it’s one just about everyone should see.

Chasing the Magic: The Nigel McGuinness Story (2019, Length: 47m)

As I mentioned earlier, CM Punk’s WWE documentary was one of the first to use extensive footage from Ring of Honor and the independent scene, and this masterpiece would not have been possible without a look at the ROH career of Nigel McGuinness.

Again, I have to warn that this is a tough one to watch, but it does have a happy ending.

Nigel McGuinness was a truly magnificent technical wrestler on the independent scene, and his dream was always to be a WWE superstar.

Unfortunately, two major struggles got in the way of that dream, an untimely injury that kept him from being medically cleared after a tryout and eventually testing positive for Hepatitis B. Ultimately, he retired from the ring without realizing his dream of signing with WWE.

However, the dream did come true in a way he’d never expected, as Nigel McGuinness was given the opportunity to be a color commentator for NXT UK. He dove headfirst into the role, committing himself fully and becoming one of the best commentators in WWE and NXT today. It’s a heart-wrenching story, but amazing to see the place Nigel McGuinness is in today.

A Future WWE: The FCW Story (2020, Length: 1h18m)

The most recent entry on this list is perhaps the best example of WWE’s use of footage never meant to be seen. FCW, or Florida Championship Wrestling, was WWE’s developmental program prior to the creation of NXT.

This documentary follows the full story of FCW, from start to finish, including in-depth interviews with current WWE superstars who came through FCW before arriving in WWE. We also get to see bits of footage, both matches and interviews, that never even made it to air during that time period.

If you currently enjoy NXT even a little bit, or love current WWE stars like Seth Rollins, Roman Reigns, and so many others, this is a gem you don’t want to miss the opportunity to see.
