WWE: 25 of the best moments in WrestleMania history
By Dorathy Gass
There’s just something about WWE WrestleMania that makes me super nostalgic. Being a lucky long-time fan who has been around since the very first Grandest Stage of Them All, with just days away from this year’s Mania, I can’t help but reflect.
I know this year’s Road to WrestleMania feels different; I know the crowd-less two-day pay-per-view will also feel different. But, regardless, it’s still WWE WrestleMania season, and perhaps there will be incredible moments from this year’s Mania that will hit the list next year.
Until then, below are 25 of the best moments in WrestleMania’s history.
25. The Very First WrestleMania
There wouldn’t even be a list if it wasn’t for the first WM of all time. I get goosebumps thinking about the launch of WWE’s very first flagship PPV, back in 1985. I was a kid back then, and I remember the buildup to the event seemed larger-than-life.
As I sat in my living room on the carpet, criss-cross applesauce, glued to the television set in anticipation, I never imagined WrestleMania would become what it is today. It truly was the start of something wonderful.
24. Miss Elizabeth Gets Hulk Hogan To Help – WM 4
Picture it: the main event of WM 4 was “The Million Dollar Man” Ted DiBiase vs. “Macho Man” Randy Savage, with both men making it to the finals of the tournament to determine who the next WWF World Heavyweight Champion would be.
Savage was outnumbered, thanks to Andre the Giant accompanying the ever-evil DiBiase to the ring, and Miss Elizabeth decided to even the playing field by running backstage and grabbing Hulk Hogan. Not only did Savage end up winning the WWF title that night, but the power faction in the Mega Powers was unofficially born.
Honorable mention for great moments in this WM goes to Miss Elizabeth’s multiple wardrobe changes, and Savage hoisting her up on his shoulders, along with his title, after the win.
23. The Return Of The Deadman – WM 20
While this year, many are hoping for the American Badass version of the Undertaker to re-emerge, back during his WM 20 program with Kane, it was clear that a rebirth of the Deadman was needed. When Paul Bearer’s voice hit the stadium prior to Taker’s entrance, the expression on Kane’s face was one of terror. Goodbye American Badass, hello Deadman!
22. John Cena As A Spectator – WM 34
John Cena waited (and waited) for a response from the Undertaker for a match at WM 35. No word from the Deadman meant that John Cena would have to attend ‘Mania, as a spectator … something that he actually ended up doing for a good part of the show until he finally got the “call” from the Phenom.
20. Naomi Winning In Her Hometown – WM 33
Naomi returning from injury to recapture her SmackDown Women’s Championship after she had to relinquish it on the Road to WrestleMania, in front of her Orlando hometown crowd to boot, is simply what WrestleMania moment dreams are made of.
