Edge vs. The Undertaker- Tables, Ladders, and Chairs match for the vacant World Heavyweight Championship (One Night Stand 2008)

While re-watching this match, I howled with laughter whenever announcers Michael Cole and Mick Foley discussed the possibility of The Undertaker’s Tables, Ladders, and Chairs match against Edge at One Night Stand 2008 being his last with WWE.

But that’s what WWE expected fans to believe when Taker took on “The Rated R Superstar” for the abdicated World Heavyweight Championship (Taker was stripped of the championship by heel SmackDown general manager Vickie Guerrero for using the Hells Gate gogoplata in prior title defenses against Edge, which she retroactively banned) on June 1 of that year; if Taker lost the match, he would be BANISHED from WWE forever (stop laughing).

The match featured the usual spots you’ve come to expect from a TLC match, but these two veterans didn’t over-rely on weapons to craft a compelling match; Edge worked over Undertaker’s leg throughout the main event, which played a pivotal role in the finish.

Of course, given that this was a 2008 Edge match, we saw interference from Curt Hawkins, Zack Ryder, Chavo Guerrero, and Bam Neely, and their shenanigans combined with Taker’s bad wheel gave Edge the opportunity to send Taker through four tables and retrieve the championship to send Taker packing (for a couple of months).

This wasn’t the greatest TLC match by any means, but it was still quite good and it will give you an idea of how long WWE has pulled the “this could be Taker’s last match” promotional tactic.
