Shawn Michaels vs. Triple H- Unsanctioned Street Fight (SummerSlam 2002)

Again, much like the previous match, it’s weird hearing the announcers – Jim Ross and Jerry “The King” Lawler in this case – talk about how WWE “wanted nothing to do” with this bout considering it aired on their PPV, but that nitpick feels insignificant when revisiting this instant classic.

This was Shawn Michaels’ first match since retiring in 1998 due to a back injury and from the opening bell, it became clear that HBK barely lost a step. He and Triple H kept the story uncomplicated – Helmsley pulverized Michaels’ back for a significant portion of the match – and within that simplicity, these two put together a nearly perfect blood war.

Sure, you could argue that Michaels didn’t get enough offense in against his opponent (though that could be explained away with either ring rust or that the onslaught he delivered made up for all the selling he did) or that the finish didn’t quite match the intensity of the feud (it was a great finish, however, and the crowd came unglued for it), but there’s little to complain about outside of that.

Michaels and Helmsley met in five more singles matches after this – each more self-serving and masturbatory than the last – but this one represented the peak of their lengthy feud.
