Taking Over DX

Some of the best memories fans have of Triple H is his time spent as a member of DX. While the faction was born in 1997, he always was thought to be more of a sidekick to leader Shawn Michaels, than a main player.

That would all change the night after WrestleMania 14. As Michaels was forced to retire because of a back injury, HHH took over the DX reigns, and he, along with the New Age Outlaws and X-Pac would continue their degenerate behavior and wreak havoc in the WWE.

This was a pivotal moment in HHH’s career, as he moved from out of the shadows of an upper-mid-carder, placed into the spotlight, and began fully hovering within the main event scene.

First WWE Championship

In 1999, HHH would finally snatch the holy grail of championships in the company by attaining his first WWE title.

While he failed to win his WWE Championship match at SummerSlam that year in a triple threat bout that saw him face “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, as well as Mankind, where Jesse “The Body” Venture acted as special guest referee (Mankind ended up pinning Austin), the following night on RAW, Hunter defeated Mankind for the gold. This would mark the first of 14 WWE title reigns for The Game.
